1. Plan Ahead

Be sure to research what you would like to do in Khao Sok National Park before you leave for your holiday.  There are many activities and attractions in the area, and you should choose those which are age appropriate for your kids.

By making sure you know what you want to see and do prior to arriving, you will help eliminate stressful planning while on your holiday.  Many things can be booked at your hotel or resort, so there is no need to pre book your activities unless you want to.

Planning ahead will also allow you to make the most of your time spent in Khao Sok National Park.

2. Pack Appropriately

Once you are in Khao Sok National Park there will not be any shopping centres or convenience stores to pick up forgotten items.

Bring lots of sunscreen and bug spray.  You will also want some other essentials such as sun hats and water bottles.  The hotels and resorts will offer drinking water, but many don’t offer water in bottles.  Hotels in the area often offer water in a more eco-friendly container so if you would like to be able to pack water out for hikes or activities you will need to bring your own bottles.

Depending on how old your kids are, you may want to bring some toys or entertainment and snacks.  Be sure to check with your hotel.  Many do not have wifi services.

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.  Even if you don’t partake in long hikes or excursions, you don’t want to be trekking around the jungle in flip flops.

If your kids are too small to walk, make sure you bring a carrier that is comfortable for you to wear.  A stroller is not convenient in the jungle or on the dirt and gravel roads around the area.

3. Choose Family Friendly Accommodations

Be sure to choose the hotel or resort that is best suited to your family needs.  There are many types of accommodations from camping to luxury hotels.  Choose your level of comfort.  Camping and eco resorts offer a more unique stay by keeping you closer to nature but still providing you with great amenities.

If you are wanting more modern creature comforts like air conditioning or swimming pools, be sure to make sure that your hotel of choice offers what you want.

4. Be Safe and Respectful

Make sure you stay on marked trails while exploring Khao Sok with kids (or without).  This is not only for your own safety but out of respect for the protected area that is the park.

Kids should also know to always stick to the trails for fear of being lost or finding themselves in a dangerous environment. In the wet season, rivers and bodies of water can be very dangerous due to fast moving water and risk of floods.

Follow all the parks rules and regulations and pack out all garbage you brought with you.

5. Book Guided Tours

If you’re not sure where to explore or perhaps too nervous to head out on your own, there are many guided tours available to book.  Take advantage of hiring someone who knows the area.

There are many tours available that can show you what the park has to offer.  They can point out interesting plants or wildlife you wouldn’t have otherwise spotted.

You can also book great excursions such as elephant tours and full or half day Cheow Lan Lake tours.  You will pay money for these tours, but the benefit will usually outweigh the cost and you won’t regret it.

6. Stay Flexible

It is important to be flexible when traveling anywhere with kids.  Try not to make an itinerary you can’t deviate from.  Sometimes kids need breaks, especially in hot muggy weather.  Don’t pre book too many activities each day.  Once you arrive you may find your days too full and everyone is getting tired.

Be sure to allow for some down time each day so everyone can stay well rested and hydrated.
